Ichthyofauna of the Adriatic Sea

The scientific monograph "Ichthyofauna of the Adriatic Sea", published by the publishing house "Golden marketing-Tehnička knjiga" from Zagreb and the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries from Split, has just come out in mid-March. The authors of this valuable work are Prof.Dr.sc. Jakov Dulčić, scientific advisor for the permanent title of the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split and Ph.D. Marcelo Kovačić, Senior Curator of the Rijeka Museum of Natural History. Both authors are renowned European and world expert ichthyologists whose work has been recognized both nationally and internationally.

In this original author's work with a clear scientific appreciation for his companionship, and in his the introductory part presents the history of knowledge of the biodiversity of the ichthyofauna of the Adriatic Sea and the biodiversity and composition of the ichthyofauna of the Adriatic Sea today. The second section provides guidance on how to use this book, and the third provides an overview of the Adriatic fish species with the key to determine. The species overview for each of them (456 species) gives: Croatian species name, scientific name, synonyms, English name, size, appearance, color, ecology, biology, distribution and frequency, importance for humans, threat, protection and literature. Particularly important are completely new keys for determining families and the key for determining species. The rearranged fish key is very understandable and easy to use. It also allows the complete layman to determine in a few steps the family and the type of fish, and little is left to subjective judgment or possible doubt. That is certainly the special value of this work.
The fourth part presents a glossary of terms and abbreviations, and the fifth lists the used literature. The sixth part provides a list of the authors of photographs and the seventh presents indexes of scientific (Latin) taxa names, Croatian names of taxa and an index of terms. The entire book has a total of 680 pages. This work is a valuable point of reference for the further research of the Adriatic and Mediterranean ichthyofauna.
