Minimal temperatures in the northern Adriatic west coast during the winter of 2001/2002 and effects on the sea fauna

Abstract

        During the months of January and February 2002, particularly low temperatures were registered by several observers in the northern Adriatic with conditions of significant homeothermy in the water column, in concomitance with the climatic conditions of the time: cold air temperatures, frost and persistent winds from the north. In this context, widespread mortality of organisms from various zoological classes was noted, both in transitional waters (lagoons and "valli") and in coastal waters of the northern and central Adriatic.
