This bibliography is a selection of references from literature published in the period from 1930 - 1980, that is from the foundation of the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split. Over this long period Institute’s scientists published their works in Institute’s publications as well as in other home and foreign publications. On this basis this bibliography is divided in two parts:
Part (A) - covering Institute’s publications
Part (B) - covering the publications other than Institute’s
The first part (A) comprises the following publications: ACTA ADRIATICA, BILJEŠKE - NOTES, IZVJEŠĆA - REPORTS, FAUNA I FLORA JADRANA - FAUNA AND FLORA OF THE ADRIATIC, POSEBNA IZDANJA - SPECIAL ISSUES and STUDIJE I ELABORATI - STUDIES AND PROJECT REPORTS.
Many distinguished, both home and foreign, scientists published their papers in Institute’s publications. Their papers have also been included in this bibliography even though some of them have never been the members of Institute’s staff.
The second part (B) comprises all the papers by Institute’s staff members published in publications other than Institute’s.
Papers of the scientists from the Biological Institute, Dubrovnik have also been included since this institute is the operating unit of the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split.
Entries have been constructed by the rules of the international standards, that is ISBD(G), ISBD(S) and ISBD(M) - International Standard Bibliographic Description, G-General, S-Serials and M-Monographic publications. These standards were applied whenever possible.
We would like to say a few words about the meaning and purpose of these standards.
Issuing the general scheme of ISBD in 1975 a demand felt by thousands of librarians for standardization of descriptive data they were using was fulfilled. Later this general scheme was accompanied by the schemes for serials and monographic publications. The primary purpose, of these standards was to promote an international exchange of information irrespective of different sources of information and languages and finally to make easier the transformation of bibliographic descriptions into a form convenient for computer data processing.
Hrvatsko bibliotekarsko društvo, Zagreb (Croatian Librarian’s Society, Zagreb) translated and adapted these standards for our region. Their use in libraries and bibliographic descriptions is still a novelty in our country.
Journal abbreviations have been given according to the rules of the FAQ »World list of aquatic sciences and fisheries serial titles«, preliminary edition and supplements 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5. Serial titles not indexed by these rules were given in their non-abreviated form.
Entries were given a CHRONOLOGICAL order according to the year of publication. They were not classified by disciplines. This way of classification we found most convenient since the bibliography covers the period of 50 years and classification by disciplines could not be consistently applied.
We tried to make the bibliography as complete as possible and therefore consulted many other institutes and scientists. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the members of Editorial board Dr. T. Pucher-Petković and Dr. M. Zore-Armanda for their kind help and advice. I also owe my gratitude to the staff of the National and University Library, Zagreb and Referal Centre, Zagreb whom I consulted in the matter of application of standards.
