Author Guidelines

Types of articles that can be submitted for consideration by the Editorial Board are:
  • a) Original articles
  • b) Review 
  • c) Short communications
within the broad field of marine and fishery sciences, referring preferably to the area of the Mediterranean or dealing with other areas, providing they relate to the Mediterranean in some aspect. Authors are encouraged to contact Editor-in-chief prior to preparation of review article. 

Original articles should contain no more than 8000 words and about 60 references and have no more than 7 figures and 4 tables.
A review  should contain between 10000 and 15000 words and about 120 references. 
Short communication should be less than 4000 words with a maximum of 3 figures or tables and about 20 references.

Permission should be obtained for the use of copyrighted material from other sources (including the Internet)

Submission of manuscripts (last revised March 18, 2024)

We kindly ask authors to carefully follow the Instructions to Authors. The manuscripts that do not comply with instructions will not be taken into consideration.

Authors are advised not to use Gmail addresses when registering and submitting their manuscripts, as they may not receive messages from our system.

The official language of the journal Acta Adriatica is English. Acta Adriatica requires manuscripts submitted to meet international English language standards to be considered for publication. Before submission, authors must ensure that the manuscript has been spell-checked and grammar-checked. Authors whose native language is not English should have their manuscript checked by a native speaker.

Cover letter

The cover letter should include the following:

  • Name, affiliation and e-mail address of the corresponding author.
  • Article type and the full title of the manuscript.
  • Brief explanation of why the submitted manuscript is suitable for Acta Adriatica and why it will be of interest to readers.
  • Statement that the manuscript has not yet been submitted for publication or otherwise published.
  • A statement confirming that all authors agree with the submission.
  • A statement that the study does not raise ethical issues. If one or more special permissions were required to conduct the study, this must be clearly stated in the cover letter and in Acknowledgements.
  • The names and e-mail addresses of the 4 proposed reviewers should be listed at the end of the cover letter.
  • Authors may also indicate up to two non-preferred reviewers with a brief explanation of why each non-preferred reviewer was selected.

The cover letter must be uploaded as a separate document.

Author contributions

We encourage authors to provide a very brief description of each author's contribution to the research in their cover letter, preferably using the CrediT roles (Conceptualization; Data curation; Formal analysis; Funding acquisition; Investigation; Methodology; Project administration; Resources; Software; Supervision; Validation; Visualization; Roles/Writing - original draft; Writing - review & editing). Authorship statements should be formatted with the names of authors first and CRediT role(s) following.

Preparation of manuscripts

Papers should be submitted in doc format (example: paper.doc).

Manuscripts should, in general be organized in the following manner:
  • Title
  • Running title (max 80 characters with spaces)
  • Author(s) name(s) (with/indicate e-mail address),
  • Affiliation(s),
  • Abstract,
  • Key words,
  • Introduction,
  • Material and methods,
  • Results,
  • Discussion (or Results and discussion for Short communications),
  • Conclusions,
  • Acknowledgements,
  • References,
  • Tables,
  • Figure captions,
  • Figures.
The titles of chapters (INTRODUCTION, ect.) should be typed in block capitals. Titles and subtitles should be typed in separate lines. For the text please use Times New Roman with font size 12. Continuous line numbering is required throughout the text.
For Croatian scientists an abstract and title in Croatian language is required. Abstract and title of all papers will be translated into Croatian by the Editorial Board for all other authors.

The abstract should be between 100 and 250 words and clearly outline the novelty, scope, major findings, and concise conclusions of the paper, avoiding abbreviations and references.

Measurements should be given in International System of Units (SI).

A minimum of 5 and maximum of 8 key words should be provided.

Vouchers of the material used in biological papers should be clearly quoted.

References

Text citations are given as Smith (2001) or (Smith, 2001). For two authors, use word "and" to separate between names (Smith and Black, 2018). If there are  more than two authors, the first author should be followed by et al. (Smith et al., 2000). All references mentioned in text need to be included in the list of references. 

The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors names and chronologically per author. If an author on the list is also mentioned with co-authors, the following order should be used: publications of a single author arranged chronologically, followed by publications of the same author with more than one co-author. Publications by the same author(s) in the same year should be listed as 2020a, b, c etc., both in the text citations and in the list of references. In case of publications with more than seven authors, please provide names for first seven followed by et al. 

References should be arranged in the following manner:

For titles of papers cited only in English, indicate the original language in parentheses:

Tables

Tables should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals.

  • Avoid vertical lines and shading
  • Avoid unnecessary bold text
  • Use Times New Roman font size 10 for legends
  • Ensure consistency of font type and size within the table


Figures

  • For initial submission, you may include all figures in a Word file. For a revised submission, please upload each figure as a separate high-resolution file, clearly labelled with the figure number
  • Maps of a study area should include a scale and geographic coordinates
  • Photographs of samples or specimens must include a scale bar
  • Ensure that font type and size are consistent. Make sure the font size is appropriate (not too small or too large)
  • For composite figures, identify each part of the figure with a capital letter (A, B, etc.) and mention it in the caption
  • Figures should be in tiff or jpeg format with at least 300 dpi for photographs, at least 1000 dpi for line drawings, and at least 500 dpi for combination bitmapped lines

Figure legends are written on a separate page. The figures should be clearly referenced in the text:

  • They showed no differences in survival (Fig.1).
  • The corresponding values of the test solutions are shown in Fig.1.

Latin names

Latin names of genera and species should be printed in italics. Validity of names should be checked in the World Register of Marine Species (https://www.marinespecies.org/).

Supplementary materials

Material that is not essential to understanding or supporting a manuscript, but is relevant to the article and could enhance the published online version may be submitted as supplementary material (appendices, large tables, high resolution images, sound clips, etc.). Authors should submit the material in electronic format together with the article and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file. Authors should ensure the necessary permissions are obtained before including any third party supplementary material with their submission.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to corresponding author and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typsetting errors.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • Where available, DOI or URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point Times New Roman font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses). For initial submission, all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed at the end of the text after the reference list.
