Antibiotic activity of some benthic algae in vicinity of Split
Abstract
Twenty one marine benthic algae of Split were tested for antibiotic activity against five species of microorganizms (Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Staphylococcus pyogenes and Candida albicans). Totally were tested 85 specimens of benthic algae and 34 (40%) of them showed antimicrobial activity against one or more microorganisms.
Among the most active species of algae were Dictyota dichotoma v. implexa and Cystoseira compressa. The most susceptible to the inhibitory products of algae was Staphylococcus pyogenes. Seasonal activity was depending upon degree of maturity of the algae.
